There I sat in my car with my soul sister.  We were getting ready to go into a women’s conference and the phrase “God hates divorce” had come up in conversation.  We paused.  What does that mean? Where is that scripture found?  We did the search and pulled it up.  There it was in Malachi 2:16 where the full scripture reads:

“For I hate divorce!”[c] says the Lord, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,[d]” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

“So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.”

A sigh of sorrow filled the car… we began to weep with one another.  The phrase in our minds was only the first 4 words in that scripture.  The context of this scripture is that God hates divorce because “it overwhelms her with cruelty”.  A cruelty that is caused when a man is unfaithful to his wife.  My heart broke.  The entire chapter of Malachi 2 further explains God’s call to faithfulness and I invite you to explore it too. It’s an epidemic facing so many Christian women that I know.  They feel stuck in a relationship where unfaithfulness is routine and their love for God and desire to keep his commandments keeps them fighting for their marriage.  To the point that they give up their own lives, their own health and sometimes their own relationship with the Lord.  God never intended this!  I ran across this article on this topic recently.  I trust it will be hope and healing for you or anyone you know who finds themselves in an unfaithful marriage situation.

My heart aches with you!
