He said to His disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Mark 4:40
I left my parents’ home in Happy, Texas late one evening after my goodbyes had taken too long. I soon regretted the fact that I hadn’t checked the weather! As the rain drops pounded my window I could see dark clouds and flashes of lightning for miles (that’s how it is in the Texas panhandle!) As I watched my knuckles turning white, I would take a deep breath and try to relax. Nothing feels lonelier than being scared in the dark. Thunder crashed and the rain fell even harder. My heart was beating harder too. I had an hour to go with no break in sight. With every big flash of light my eyes scanned my surroundings hoping not to see anything else coming from those clouds.
I took another deep breath and turned the dial on my radio and there it (He) was…”Light, light, light up the sky; You light up the sky to show me that you are with me.” The Christian band, The Afters, was singing to God. I looked around at the Light show. I smiled at my Daddy, God. I smiled at the lightning. I loosened my grip on the steering wheel. In my fear I felt God’s absence, but the reality was – the storm was the very Presence of God. Each flash was His power manifested on earth. I wasn’t afraid anymore. I started singing His song back to Him. No more white knuckles. He got me safely home.
How many times are we caught in the storms of life and all we can focus on is the darkness? In the chaos we fail to see His power. We try to manage on our own. We are so intent on getting away that we don’t see God’s Presence in the storm. Trust the Light. Give Him the controls. He will get you safely Home.
“The Heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His Hands.” Psalm 19:1
