Nothing Cute About These CUTIES by Gloria Toti

It was appalling.  How could their parents allow these little girls to be used this way?

I don’t have little girls in my home, but I know many of you do.  So, on the behalf of the innocence of your little girls, I speak out today.

I’m not sure if you heard about this film that was created in order to show how preteen girls can choose their version of femininity. I watched no more than 2 minutes of a video clip and I sat at my computer and cried as I watched little girls turned into pornographic dancing models.

One doesn’t have to push little girls into a mud pit in order to show them what mud is.

Exploiting children to warn about exploiting children is the wrong way to prevent the exploitation of children.

This film hyper-sexualizes little girls, no doubt, to the delight of pedophiles.

We cannot condone the exploitation of these 11year-old actresses in order to make a point or while attempting to teach them about true womanhood.

Netflix issued statement saying “Cuties” is “a social commentary against the sexualization of young children” and encouraged critics to watch it.  Don’t watch it.  Someone already watched and tells us what we will find:

“Eleven-year-old Amy starts to rebel against her conservative family’s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew.”

This is not educational for the sake of empowering girls, but rather vulgar and pornographic in nature.

This video is upsetting and depicts little girls in a gruesome light, and Netflix’s is ready to desensitize millions of viewers at home by asking them to be entertained by it.

The producer of the film says that in performing research for the film —she met with hundreds of pre-teens to understand how they perceived their femininity in today’s society.

She said: “Our girls see that the more a woman is sexualized on social media, the more she’s successful.”  How can she really think this is helpful?

That is not success.. nor is it freedom.  IT’S BONDAGE of another kind.

Amy is the film’s protagonist who is “navigating between two models of femininity,” — one represented by her mother’s traditional beliefs, and the other by the Cuties dance squad.

Amy believes she can “find her freedom through that group of dancers and their hyper-sexualization.”

No wonder criticism erupted over young cast members being presented in provocative poses and revealing costumes.  I hope you are having conversations with your little girls over what others might be trying to introduce to their innocent little eyes.

  • • 1. “When caught with her cousin’s phone, an eleven-year-old girl locks herself in the bathroom, pulls down her pants, and snaps a picture of her private parts before publishing it online. No nudity is actually shown.”
  • • 2. “Children are watching pornography on a cell phone. Nothing is shown, little girls are huddling around a phone and talking about what is going on.
  • • 3. Another scene shows two young girls watching the routine of a rival, older dance team on a cell phone. One of the girls exposes her bare body. Her body is briefly visible.
  • • 4. “Frequent scenes of eleven-year-old girls dancing lewdly where the camera pans in and zooms in on their bodies.”
  • • 5. “A scene where an eleven-year-old girl dressed in a tank and panties is splashed with water and begins twerking in a frenzied kind of way.

Let’s continue to use the controversy it has sparked to condemn such exploitation and to work for the protection of children around the world. These are not the role models we want for our children.

The Bible declares that “children are a heritage from the Lord” (Psalm 127:3).

The sexual exploitation of children is horrifically wrong – we must protect the true femininity of young girls as they become women.
