Lessons From Mr. Gideon…by Gloria Toti

Would you say you are a Self-Focused or a God-Focused?

This morning, I read about a guy named Gideon in the Bible.

At first glance, it seems like this guy is humble,

but when you look a bit closer at his life, hie is very insecure and then he let pride robs him blind.

Do we give God credit publicly but secretly crave the recognition? Humility is tested in how we respond to praise and criticism.

It’s amazing how life offers all of us two sides of a coin just like it did for Gideon.

One moment it’s heads and then quickly moves to tails.

Humility gets bullied by insecurity and invites it’s best friend Mr. Arrogance to bully us as well

  • Insecurity says, “I’m not enough.”
  • Arrogance says, “I’m more than enough.”

True humility doesn’t mean thinking less of ourselves—it means thinking of ourselves less.

It shifts the focus from how I measure up to how God is working through me.

So, what’s the cure for both insecurity and arrogance?

God-confidence.

Instead of looking inward at our weaknesses or strengths, we look upward at God’s power.

At any moment, we can Flip the Coin—

Choose God-Confidence by saying things like this:

God’s word says, “My grace is sufficient for you.”

“Apart from me, you can do nothing.”

Practical Steps to Overcome Both

  • When you feel insecure, remind yourself: God doesn’t call the qualified—He qualifies the called.
  • When you feel arrogant, remind yourself: Every victory comes from God, not you.
  • Stay humble by staying dependent on God. Seek His guidance in every season—whether you’re in the winepress or on the battlefield.
