The Domino Effect by Tammy Barber

The domino effect or chain reaction is the cumulative effect generated when a particular event triggers a chain of similar events. This is often an analogy for a falling row of dominoes. I remember stacking up rows of dominos as a kid to see if I could align them properly for the big “fall” and the corresponding pattern. Apparently, many of us think this is cool as there is even a TV show called Domino Masters.

The Holy Spirit reminded me recently that this chain reaction works both ways. I saw a mental picture of dominoes falling one way…. in an Earthly way as though I had placed them there. Then, I saw the dominoes falling in reverse order, down a new path towards the Lord. This pattern was intricate with each new bend displaying even more brilliance and excitement. If we are going down the wrong path in our lives, we can change our course and move in the opposite direction towards what God has for us. This positive change in direction can generate enough force, metaphorically, to move the fallen dominoes in reverse order (on a new path) for our fresh start. Of course, I always knew the Lord invited us to change direction and move in accordance with the path He has for us but having this domino picture really hit home for me.

Ecclesiastes 9:18 says that “one sinner destroys much good.”  This is a reminder about the domino effect of sin as there is a contagious power to sin that we often overlook. My fallen dominos were strewn along the path of too much television. I realized I was binge watching Netflix and Hulu and not the best shows it turns out. It started out small with me just watching a show here and there but then I was watching more and more. I realized I needed to make big changes if I wanted to get my Bible time in and precious time with the Lord. I cancelled Hulu, Netflix, Disney and added Pure Flix for occasional movies. The best part is that I do not miss my shows at all! In fact, I feel relieved and fulfilled to be spending valuable time in the Bible and with the Holy Spirit. This one change has already blessed me so much!

Romans 12:2 says “do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

What fallen dominos do you have in your life? What habits and patterns are the Lord gently nudging you to change? Press in and listen for God’s still, small voice. Heavenly adventures await!
