Fireflies
Tiny in stature — tiny in size
Amazing light illuminating tiny bodies
Not really noticed or even truly admired
Until the sun goes down
And perception and dimension take on new twists and turns
Comforting — warm
Matching from the inside out
The mastery of the Father’s heart
The glow of the Creator’s design!
John 1:5
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
My earliest remembrance of fireflies is such a fond childhood memory of mine! I can easily close my eyes, go back in time, and instantly recollect a beautiful summer evening with family and friends. The real fun began when God’s fireflies became cool little flashlights right as the sun went down and nighttime set in.
Fireflies are symbolically used to show Christ’s light shining through us in a dark world. I love the picture this paints as we illuminate and communicate God’s presence everywhere He takes us and sends us. As individuals, we definitely shine and make a significant difference. When we unite with other believers, we create an unstoppable movement spreading Christ’s message of hope, light, and extravagant love.
Matthew 5:14, 16
“You are the light of the world… In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Imagine catching God’s glory
And trying to confine it in a jar.
Will it continue to illuminate the darkness
Each and every night?
Or was it never meant to be tamed,
Confined, covered, or snuffed out—
But to freely travel to new places, faces, territories, and hearts,
Becoming brighter and brighter
As perception and dimension
Expand to glorious depths and breathtaking heights!
Interestingly enough, adult firefly life spans are very short, ranging from one to four weeks. We must not forget that our time on Earth is short as well. May we remember to be the best lights we can be each and every day and as often as possible. May we always be eager to share God’s light with others and shine with intensity as we move toward His will and purposes.
Be the Light!
Share the Light!
Spread the Light!
Fun Firefly Facts:
- Firefly flashes can be green, blue, yellow, or pale red
- They can be found on every continent except Antarctica
- Fireflies are not closely related to flies but are actually beetles empowered with bioluminescence
- They use flashing patterns, and some species even synchronize their flashes
- Synchronized fireflies are a special species called Photinus carolinus, and they all flash in unison. It is such a sought-after event in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, that a lottery is held just to choose who gets to see it!
