The Greatest Prayer a Parent Can Pray By Keeley Schafer

When I was 22 years old I went to the ophthalmologist for a stye on my eye. They also gave me an eye exam to test my vision. Honestly, it had been years since I’d had an eye exam and they told me I needed glasses. I purchased some big, dark emerald green, round-rimmed glasses which I thought were very cool. Ha! The next morning, my husband, Kevin and I went on a long road trip. I was wearing my glasses and I could not believe what I was seeing. The leaves on the trees were so detailed and vivid. I was used to trees looking like one hazy blob of green on top of the trunk. But now I could see the individual leaves on the trees in such magnificent detail. I told Kevin, “I can’t believe how beautiful everything is. It’s like I’m seeing for the very first time!” I thought I knew what everything looked like, but I was wrong. There was so much more that I had been missing.

2 Corinthians 4:4 says that the god of this world – (that is the devil) specializes in blinding people’s spiritual eyes from the truth and light of God. The devil’s greatest desire is to keep our kids in spiritual darkness. There are things that God wants our children to know and there are things He wants them to have. If they can’t see those things, they’re not going to do them any good.

I came across a powerful prayer that Paul prayed for the church of Ephesus in Ephesians 1:17-18. I have prayed this prayer literally thousands of times for my children.

“God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, give my children the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that they may know you better. I pray that the eyes of their heart would be flooded with light and truth so they may know the hope to which you have called them. In Jesus name. Amen.”

Just like the day I saw the beauty of the landscape with my new glasses, God wants our kids to see in full, brilliant, color. He wants them to live with confident purpose. He wants them to walk in His wisdom and revelation. This prayer is literally the greatest prayer a parent can pray.

I also want to encourage you that if your kids are not living for God right now and they’ve taken on some worldly views, pray this prayer. There is always something we can do as parents and that is PRAY. If your kids don’t want to have anything to do with God, the devil is blinding the truth from their spiritual eyes, and this prayer will help them see clearly.

You are now armed with a very powerful prayer. I hope you will pray this prayer often and please don’t keep it to yourself. Why not share it with a few moms and dads or grandparents and get them praying it too?
