Here recently I’ve been reading a devotional from Jennie Allen called, “Get Out Of Your Head,” which is a powerful book about stopping the downward spiral of toxic thoughts.
I struggle with being in my head more than I should. Am I doing good enough in motherhood? Did what I say come off rude because I’m having a bad day? We can take the tiniest flaw of a moment and turn it into a downward spiral.
Jennie tells us in her book to take those thoughts captive because God tells us we can.
“Take every thought captive to obey Christ” -2 Corinthians 10:5
The enemy is always clocked in, ready to make us feel incapable and unworthy, but we serve a good God who reassured us in scripture that if we resist the temptations of the enemy he will depart because God’s love is greater.
“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you” -James 4:7
She also says something super powerful in her book that really stuck with me. “Learning to capture our thoughts matters because how we think shapes how we live.”
And that is absolutely so true. I fight a daily battle with anxiety and depression. Being stuck in those two I find myself pushing people away, acting out in anger rather than in love, and I believe every lie I tell myself rather than the truth of God. It can be a viscous cycle, but the more you turn your thoughts on God’s holy world the less you will be held captive in those thoughts.
I pray for anyone who struggles with this and I encourage you to dive into this book. Jennie Allen is a phenomenal writer and the scriptures she shares in her book are profound. This book is a mind shift that we all need and a great way to start your day.
