As children, we often look to our parents for approval and guidance. I remember, in every sport I played, I wanted to hear the applause of my parents and sister. I played with the hope of hearing, “That’s my daughter!” and imagined a standing ovation whenever I made a good play.
As I grew older, that longing for applause never really went away. I found myself seeking approval from many different sources: coaches, teachers, even friends. I wanted them all to be proud of me and to recognize what I could do for them. I worked hard for their applause.
When I gave my life to Christ, I started serving in the college ministry I was part of. I thought I was doing everything for Christ. But deep down, I was still waiting to hear, “Good job!” or “Wow, you’re doing amazing,” from the leaders around me. When I didn’t get that affirmation—and saw others receiving it instead—I felt upset and wondered, “Where’s my applause?”
It took me a long time to realize that everything—and I mean EVERYTHING—I do is for Christ alone.
In everything we do, we represent Christ. Our actions reflect not just ourselves but also our King. The applause we should be seeking is that of Christ, our Savior.
Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.”
So, how are you serving and representing Christ? Are you giving Him your all, obeying His commands, and working as though you are working directly for Him? Are there areas where you could represent Christ better in your everyday life? I encourage you to sit with the Lord and reflect on how you can serve Him more fully.
Psalm 139:23-24: “Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
