May Flowers by Brianna Richardson

May holds a special place in my heart, particularly from my senior year of high school and all the events leading up to graduation in May. Every year around this time, I take a moment to reflect on and honor the person I was in high school, because I know at the end of the day, that girl was just doing the best she could.

Because my teenage years were filled with challenges that were beyond my control, teens hold a special place in my heart. I go out of my way to support and befriend the ones in my life, because I remember that being a teenager was one of the hardest stages in my journey, and I’m certain it hasn’t gotten any easier for the youth of today. With graduation on the way for many high school seniors, I’d like to share some advice I would’ve liked to give myself as a young adult, just beginning to bloom and come into my own.

  1. Don’t let anyone make you ashamed or embarrassed of your youth, or the naivete that goes with it. We were all beginners once.
  2. Life can be stressful. Make sure you’re taking care of yourself, or you won’t be able to take care of anyone else.
  3. Some people will go to college. Some will go to a trade school. Some want to dedicate a few years to missionary work. Whatever you decide to do, do it as unto the Lord.
  4. Enjoy the little things; as you age, you’ll find they make up some of your fondest memories.
  5. When people offer to be a helping hand, a shoulder to cry on, a number to call when you just need to vent, take them up on the offer. It’s more than okay to ask for help. And of course, pay it forward.
  6. Jesus. Jesus in the morning when you’ve overslept and just have time for mouthwash. Jesus when adulting means you have to call and hash something out with your insurance. Jesus when it’s hour three of an all-nighter, and the words on the page are blurring and you’ve managed to misspell your own name on your final essay. Jesus above all.

You’ve got this. Because He’s got you.

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24 ESV

You are loved.
