Refine by Carolyn Castro

“If Your glory wants to come in
Let it fall, we want it all.
Lord, Your fire is consuming.
Fill this place, set it ablaze.
I’ll be a living sacrifice for You.

You’re a Fire, the Refiner.
I wanna be consumed.
I wanna be tried by fire,

Purified.
You take whatever You desire,
Lord, here’s my life.

Clean my hands, purify my heart.
I wanna burn for You, only for You.
Take my life as a sacrifice.
I wanna burn for You, only for You.”

This song, Refiner by Maverick City Music, was playing in the background one day. I was singing along—not very well, let’s be honest—when one of my friends, who was also listening, said, “I would not want to sing this song. That’s a strong declaration. It’s too scary to sing.”

Her comment caught me off guard, but I didn’t think too much of it at the moment. Later, though, the Lord brought that conversation back to my mind, and I started thinking, Why not declare those words? Even if it feels scary, why not trust God to refine me?

Singing this song is more than just words; it’s a declaration. It’s saying, “God, do what You need to do in me. Take away anything that’s not of You.”

When we said “Yes” to God and “No” to the world, He started something new in us. We aren’t meant to stay the same. We’re called to grow, change, and become more like Jesus. God is always at work in us—sanctifying and purifying us, transforming and renewing our minds, bodies, and souls (Romans 12:2).

“He will sit like a refiner of silver, burning away the dross. He will purify the Levites, refining them like gold and silver, so that they may once again offer acceptable sacrifices to the LORD.” —Malachi 3:3

My prayer for you (and myself) is this:
“Lord, refine me. Place me in the fire. Burn away what isn’t of You, and mold me to be more like You.”

I also want to encourage you to take some time to read and pray Psalm 51 over your life. Let’s ask God to purify our hearts and burn away anything that doesn’t belong so we can emerge from the fire looking more like Jesus.
